THE SWORDFISH

When a swordfish is grown it may be more than fifteen feet long and weigh more than 1,000 pounds. They live in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean from California to Chili, Hawaii and Japan, and near Australia and New Guinea.

They are built somewhat like a chunky, old fashioned submarine. The sword may be three feet long and four or five inches wide at the base. Adult swordfish do not have scales and are toothless. The eggs of a swordfish are very hard to see and hatch in two or three days. Long spines run down the back like fringes. Their tail is fringed too.

A swordfish will charge at a school of fish. When he gets in the middle of the fish he cuts them up with his sword and eats them. On a sunny day you can see the back fins sticking out of the water. But if the day is not sunny, you will not see a swordfish.
