Harpoons are arrow shaped and used to spear large fish and whales. A long time ago whaling harpoons were thrown, today they use powerful guns to shoot the harpoon.

A long coiled line is ties to the harpoon and the gun. When the spade shaped point hits the whale it sinks deeply into the whale and resists being pulled out. The harpoon and the gun are kept at the bow of the boat.
