Chapter Eighteen

George's Prayer

by

Mrs. Pucciarrello

George loved third grade at Liberty Christian School. His favorite subject was Bible. He loved learning about God.

Sometimes George felt lonely, even though he had lots of friends. He loved all his classmates, but he missed his grasshopper friends. Mrs. Condra told George to say a prayer when he felt sad.

One day, during Bible, Mrs. Watts came to Mrs. Condra's class to announce that Mrs. Pucciarello was in the hospital having her babies. Everyone was really excited, except George. He was afraid that he would never see Mrs. Pucciarello again. George wondered if Mrs. Pucciarello would still love him, once she got busy with her new sons.

A month went by and George hadn't heard anything about Mrs. Pucciarello and the babies. George hoped that nothing was wrong. Lately, a lot of things in George's life had been going wrong.

George had tried out for the football team, but the coach made a decision that all players had to use a regulation size football. George loved playing football last year and this made him sad.

Lizzy and Rex had gotten married and moved away. George didn't get to see them anymore. Every now and then he got a postcard from some place far away.

The magazine sale had come and gone. George had been feeling so sorry for himself that he didn't even sell one magazine. Kaitlin won the magazine sale instead.

All of George's friends seemed so busy now. No one invited him to go places. It had been almost a year since he had gone snowboarding, skiing, ice skating and dancing. He used to feel so special, but now he felt just like everybody else.

George still had lots of friends and everyone still played with him. But, after school, all the kids would go home with their families and George just stayed at school.

George never forgot the dream he had about Georgeena. He wished he had a "bestest of best friend" ever, like in his dream. One evening, after all his classmates had gone home, George opened his Bible and began praying. He asked God for a new friend. He wanted a friend who could understand him.

The next morning, Mrs. Condra announced that Mrs. Pucciarello was coming for a visit and was bringing the triplets! George was excited to finally meet the babies. He wondered if Mrs. Pucciarello would remember him.

When Mrs. Pucciarello arrived, George almost got squished when everyone rushed to see the babies. Finally, he was able to get close enough to see. Then, one of the babies dropped a rattle and it barely missed his head.

George felt like crying. He didn't think Mrs. Pucciarello remembered him, now that she had the triplets. Then Mrs. Pucciarello looked up and said, "Where's George? I have a special surprise for him!"

George turned around and jumped into Mrs. Pucciarello's hand. She gave him a big hug and said, "George, I know it's not easy being the only grasshopper attending Liberty. Since you have done so well here, Mrs. Watts decided we could use another student. She said that I could introduce our new student to the class. George, I would like you to meet... Georgeena!!!!"

George's heart jumped and he knew that God had answered his prayers and he would never feel lonely again.
